Mary Griswold has deep roots in the Chicago theatrical community. Her first professional credit was the Organic Theater Company’s premiere of David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago, co-designed with John Paoletti. This began a fifteen year collaboration on a number of notable shows, among them The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with Organic, on WTTW-TV, at the Goodman Theater and on tours in the US and Europe, the multiple Jefferson award winning She Always Said, Pablo with Goodman and at the Kennedy Center, The Good Soldier Schweik and Postcard From Morocco with Chicago Opera Theater and The Mysteries: Creation/Passion with Court Theater at Rockefeller Chapel.
She has over forty opera productions to her credit, among them three completely different productions of The Mother of Us All and twenty with Eastman Opera Theater. She has designed the premieres of more than fifty new plays and musicals as resident set designer at Victory Gardens Theater, as a frequent collaborator with Live Bait Theater and at other venues. As a scenic designer who is also a scenic artist, she often prefers to paint her own designs.
She has served as a regional and national officer, including a brief stint as president during its centennial year, of United Scenic Artists, Local 829, and was the first graduate of the Northwestern University Theater Department’s MFA Program.
